Join the Experimental Environmental Flow Lab

University of Utah | Department of Mechanical Engineering
PI: Dr. Dhiraj Singh

We are seeking highly motivated Ph.D. students and/or research assistants to join our lab working at the intersection of fluid dynamics, atmospheric science, and instrumentation development. Our group focuses on experimental investigations of:

Inertial particle dynamics (e.g., snowflakes, fog droplets) in atmospheric turbulence

Environmental sensing: development of novel sensors (e.g., DEID, SnowPixel, LWC sensors)

Precipitation and pollution interaction

Photoelastic stress analysis and fluid-structure interactions

Field campaigns and wind tunnel testing

Students in the lab will gain experience with:

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV)

Sensor design, calibration, and field deployment

Wind tunnel experiments and outdoor atmospheric measurements

Proposal writing, publishing, and scientific presentations

We welcome applicants from Mechanical Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Physics, and related disciplines with strong interest in experiments, instrumentation, and environmental fluid mechanics.
